Autreach Groups

Autreach Groups

Autreach is a network of autonomous groups. Being an Autreach group requires an acceptance of the “Autreach principles” [exact wording of these currently under discussion], but every group is independent, has its own membership, governs and finances itself. An individual can, of course, be a member of more than one group, but individual people are not members of “Autreach”, and Autreach is not directed or managed by any individual or group of people1.

Autreach Network

This is a “virtual group”, to which members of individual Autreach groups automatically belong.

Another virtual group, for members of the Autreach Network Discussion Forum — a web-based forum (“bulletin board”) for discussions of general interest.

Topic areas include:

  • General Political and Campaigning Discussion
    • Campaigns and Resources
    • Press and Media References to Autism
    • Autistic Politics, Philosophy, Research, and Education
    • ...
  • Autonomous Autreach Groups
    • Autreach Europe
    • ...

Registering for access to the forum implies agreement with the Autreach Principles (there are also terms of service)

From the AutreachIT: About Us page:

To be included, empowered, and able to take a real part in decisions about their own lives, autistic people need effective ways to communicate. Legislation supports their right of access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

London Autistic Rights Movement

Description of the London ARM Yahoo group :

“This group has been set up to continue discussion regarding the ‘Autistic Rights Movement’ (formerly known as ‘Politics of Autism’), and to facilitate easy communication between members regarding our issues and organising future meetings. Although meetings are based in London, it is available to anyone who would like to participate in our discussion.”

There is an associated email group open to researchers:

“This group has been set up to allow professionals working with interest in autism to have a greater insight into the workings of the Autistic Rights Movement, and how autistic people communicate and organise things between ourselves.”
