POSTnote on autism (public)

POSTnote on autism (public)

Members of AutreachIT and the London Autistic Rights Movement group met with the authors of the Autism POSTnote in December 2007, and subsequently reviewed the draft note, suggesting significant changes.

POST is the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, the UK Parliament’s in-house source of independent, balanced and accessible analysis of public policy issues related to science and technology. POST publishes POSTnotes (short briefing notes) and longer reports. Both focus on current science and technology issues and aim to anticipate policy implications for parliamentarians.”

The summary of POSTnote 302 – Autism on the POST website is:

“Autism affects how a person communicates, socialises and interprets the world. This can lead to wide ranging difficulties in every day life including forming relationships and living independently. Recent evidence that autism is more prevalent than previously recognised has put pressure on service providers and highlighted the need to train professionals to improve awareness of autism. This POSTnote describes autism and autism research, and considers policy approaches.”

(Autreach group members commented on an earlier draft summary, prior to the writing of the POSTnote.)
